What is so great about fine dining?

I have eaten at several 5 star restaurants in Detroit....Seldom Blues, Ruth Chris, The Rattlesnake Club, and The Whitney. I don't see anything special. Ok the presentation is great but is it really worth the price. I'm not cheap but I want to know what is so appealing, i mean i'd rather go on a vacation than spend top dollar on a steak. Especially to women, why is 5 star dining necessary every week? Some insight please. Thanks! What is so great about fine dining?
Maybe they don't have anywhere else to wear their fancy clothes? Sorry I can't give any more insight. I agree with you. I cannot justify spending that kind of money on FOOD! It's utterly ridiculous. Maybe ppl just want to dress up, or be seen by other ppl, or be able to discuss the wonderful dish they had the next time they are in the company of others. I'd rather spend money on something that lasts, memories and experiences included (but I don't think that the memory of a meal is going to stick with me for years to come, no matter how exquisite.) Besides, I feel guilty when I spend $ on stupid things. I mean, I could have had a good meal for 5 dollars and donated the rest of that money to charity!

Edit: You could try telling her that you don't feel completely comfortable at those places. I know I don't. I feel like I can't relax and be myself. If you can't be yourself, you're not really spending quality time w/ the one you love.

Or ... you could tell her that if you save money by eating at less expensive places you can buy something nicer later. (A boat, a trip to Paris ... whatever.) If you're serious w/ her, you could even say "wouldn't you rather me surprise you w/ diamond ear rings instead of going out to eat!?" (If you're VERY serious, you could imply that you are saving for a nice engagement ring, a beautiful wedding, and an unforgettable honeymoon.)

Or ... you could tell her that you feel guilty eating $100 meals all the time while children are starving and digging through trash cans :-(

Also remind her that we are in a recession dam mit!!!
I totally agree with you. Whenever I dine with my mother she likes to go to the fancy restaurants, which is nice to experience but I am fine with the more casual places to eat. I would rather pay 20 bucks for a plate of bbq with sides than 80-100 dollars for one steak and nothing else on the plate. Its overrated and the atmosphere is usually so stuffy.

Dont get me wrong a nice meal is nice once in a while, but im down for chili's or a cheesecake factory type of restaurant any day! What is so great about fine dining?
its nothing all it is food you can get from a chain rest served on fine china with better silverware and a server w/ better manners
5 star dining should be a special treat ..

not the normWhat is so great about fine dining?
